On the 19th of April 2018, AYSDN’s Ambassadors in Lebanon Nouhad Awad and Michel Frem held a conference about Sustainability and Solid Waste Management for a group of engineering students at the Saint Joseph University of Beirut USJ.
This activity falls within the framework of the Lebanese Ambassadors action plan for the year 2018.
Nouhad and Michel adopted a modern type of conferencing that directly involves the audience hence making it an active actor that participates in building the conclusions rather than being a passive receiver.
The conference started with an introduction about sustainability and SDGs as well as brief overview about the Solid Waste situation in Lebanon.
The main target of this event was to raise awareness about the importance of reducing the amount of solid waste going to landfills or incineration by increasing the rate of recycling/upcycling and by decreasing the rate of consumed materials and products.
A comparison about the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment solution was also presented to the students by focusing on the issue that no global solution exists: each case has its own particularities and decision making should be taken accordingly.
As a result, one of the main outputs of this conference was raising awareness about the importance of reducing reusing and recycling as well as critical thinking concerning the integrated solid waste management plan to be adopted.
