World Environment Day Overview:
We have not come down, for a long time, to exploit and destroy the ecosystems of our planet. Every three seconds, the world loses from the forests what is equal to a football field. Over the past century, we have destroyed half of the wetlands. We have already lost up to 50 percent of the coral reef, and we could lose up to 90 percent of it by 2050, even if global warming is limited to a 1.5°C increase.
The loss of the world’s ecosystem deprives the world of carbon basins such as forests and peat lands at a time when humanity cannot afford it. Global greenhouse gas emissions have increased for three consecutive years and the planet is one of the pace of potentially catastrophic climate change.
By reducing the area of natural habitats for animals, we have created the ideal conditions for the spread of pathogens — including Coronaviruses.
Illustrating this large and complex picture, World Environment Day focuses on restoring the ecosystem under the theme of ‘Reimagining, Rebuilding, Restoring’
This year’s World Environment Day will be the beginning of the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares of forests and agricultural land, from the high mountains to the deep sea.
World Environment Day goals:
Educating individuals in society about the dangers facing the environment.
2. Encourage the general public to participate actively on this day by celebrating and contributing to the protection of the environment.
3. Motivate individuals to take care of the environment around them to make them cleaner and safer in order to protect them and enjoy a more prosperous future.
Investing in ecosystems is an investment in our future:
World Environment Day 2021, which Pakistan is hosting official celebrations, calls for urgent action to revive our affected ecosystems.
Our survival depends on healthy ecosystems from forests to coasts. Ecosystems mean the interaction between organisms – plants, animals and individuals – and their surroundings. This includes not only nature, but man-made systems such as cities or farms as well.
Restoring the ecosystem is a widespread global task. It’s a process that commits to repairing billions of hectares of land — more than China or the United States — so that people can have access to food, clean water and livelihoods.
