Event
Earth Hour is a global environmental event organized by WWF that motivates individuals, communities and companies to turn off unnecessary lights and electronic devices for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. local time on a Saturday in March, to raise awareness of the danger of climate change.
Beginning of the Event
Australian Sydney was the first to start the campaign in 2007, and since then this number has grown to more than 7,000 cities and villages around the world.
Earth Hour target
Earth Hour aims to encourage individuals and institutions to rationalize daily electricity and water consumption and fight pollution, as well as contribute to recycling. The Global Fund directs individual and institutional institutions to take a series of measures to participate in Earth Hour, the most important of which is to turn off unnecessary lights for an hour, to raise awareness of the occasion through social media platforms, and to move globally to address climate change from theory to realistic application in people’s lives.
Rate of electricity use per earth hour
A 2014 study published in the Journal of Energy research and social sciences collected 274 compared to observed changes in electricity demand due to Earth Hour in 10 countries, over a period of 6 years, and found that events reduced electricity consumption by 4%. The study noted the political challenge of turning the short-term energy saving of Earth Hour into long-term actions, including continuing changes in behaviour and investment.
Earth Hour and Sustainable Energy
Earth Hour’s initiative is primarily aimed at drawing attention to the earth’s climate crisis. Raise awareness about sustainable energy use. Earth Hour is also an important event to send messages about the importance of achieving sustainable energy by many organizations and governments, through which to show individuals and institutions the amount of energy wasted without their importance to us.
AYSDN Initiative for Earth Hour
As with all events related to sustainable development, the Arab Youth Sustainable Development Network at Earth Hour explains this event and encourages followers across all social media to participate in this event by turning off the spotlight and unnecessary devices, and also explains the goal and the importance of rational use of energy to address climate change. The network directs all its members and members to initiate the event from their homes and workplaces and encourage the environment around them to do so.
