On the evening of Tuesday, 16 September 2025, the Arab Youth Sustainable Development Network (AYSDN) organized the second session of its training program on “Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation.”

The session, titled “Understanding Hazards, Vulnerabilities, and Capacities,” was delivered by a group of experts in the field:
Fatima Mohammed – Master’s in Management, International Development, and Gender Studies. She addressed the theme of understanding hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacities, explaining several key concepts such as hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and others. She also presented the types of hazards and the concept of community vulnerability, stating:
“A disaster occurs when the level of hazard exceeds the community’s capacity to cope with it.”
She added:
“Vulnerable communities are those with limited capacity to deal with hazards.”

Hamza Al-Azzam – Director of Development, Investment, and International Relations. He focused on the theme of deconstructing risks: hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacities, reviewing classifications of hazards and providing examples from the Arab region. He also emphasized the importance of understanding vulnerabilities and managing risks, noting:
“It is possible to deconstruct risks, understand them, and manage them.”
The session, attended by more than 100 participants, concluded with strong positive feedback, underscoring the importance of understanding vulnerabilities and capacities, risk analysis, and other critical issues.
