Report on My Participation as a Guest Speaker in a Training Program by the Jordanian Youth Biodiversity Network
- Date: Saturday, July 12, 2025
- Hosting Organization: Jordanian Youth Biodiversity Network
- Session Title: The Intersection of Biodiversity and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Duration: 1 hour
- Platform: Google Meet
Session Summary:
During the session, I shared a number of impactful experiences and key strategies for establishing strong and high-impact youth networks. I emphasized the significance of these networks in building youth capacities—especially when they are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I also reflected on my own journey in founding the Arab Youth Sustainable Development Network (AYSDN), highlighting the diverse programs implemented, the leadership roles I’ve undertaken—including my previous position as Head of Communications and Media —and how AYSDN has grown into a leading, high-impact model in youth empowerment, with a clear vision, mission, and strategic focus, making it a sought-after partner for development institutions.
In the technical discussion, I elaborated on the strong and direct correlation between biodiversity and the achievement of sustainable development, noting that the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are not only essential for environmental outcomes, but also fundamental to advancing broader development goals.
Additionally, I addressed the situation in the Gaza Strip, focusing on the severe environmental destruction resulting from the Israeli occupation — particularly the large-scale damage to agricultural, touristic, and ecological zones. This has resulted in the destruction of over 75% of the territory and the loss of 10% of its population. Poverty levels have surged beyond 100% due to these ongoing violations.
I emphasized that biodiversity is intrinsically connected to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land). These intersections highlight the urgent need to protect species that are linked to ecological and biological systems, especially in the context of accelerating climate change and biodiversity loss. Preserving these ecosystems is essential not only for environmental goals but also for achieving broader development objectives. If these systems are properly conserved and maintained, this will have a direct impact on achieving Goal 1 (No Poverty) and Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), particularly through strengthening food security and promoting sustainable production—both of which are vital for achieving social and economic stability.
Closing Remarks:
In the final segment of the session, I responded to participants’ questions and shared a final piece of advice on the importance of continuous learning. In today’s digital era, access to knowledge has become easier than ever. I encouraged youth to actively engage in volunteer efforts through youth networks, emphasizing that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the proactive involvement of young people. I concluded by stating that biodiversity protection is not merely an environmental concern—it is a foundational pillar for economic and social development, and key to human well-being.•
